Glen Waverley sits at the end of its railway line, and much of it was built in a rush of private estates during the 1960s, on blocks generous enough that the garage can be a long walk from the meter box. That distance is the first thing we measure for any EV charger installation Glen Waverley homeowners book. The trip from our Brighton premises at 99 Bay St is about 15 km in a straight line, and the electricians who make it are A-grade, working under REC 35838.

The suburb is also changing around Kingsway, where the planning scheme now encourages apartments near the planned Suburban Rail Loop station. So this page covers both: the long-driveway house and the shared car park.

EV charger installation Glen Waverley on a generous block

At the 2021 Census, 79.1% of occupied Glen Waverley dwellings were separate houses, with an average of 3.5 bedrooms. On a typical wide lot the garage or carport may sit well back from the street. That layout is pleasant to live with and awkward to wire, because the charger circuit has to travel from the switchboard, wherever it is mounted, to wherever the car spends the night.

There are three usual ways to get the circuit there:

  • Along the house. Cable in conduit fixed along walls and eaves, then across a short gap to the garage. Quickest where the buildings are close together.
  • Under the floor or through the roof space. Hidden, and often neat, but it depends on access and clearances in a 1960s house.
  • Underground. A trench across the yard or beside the driveway, with conduit at the required depth. Best for a freestanding garage, though it means lifting pavers or lawn.

Length changes the cable as well as the labour. A typical 32 amp single-phase charger in a house usually needs 6 mm² cable, and long runs can call for something heavier, such as 10 mm², to keep voltage drop in check. That is one reason two quotes for the same charger on neighbouring blocks can differ, alongside trenching, switchboard space and the supply type. Where the run is simple, it is a standard home EV charger installation job.

Plan for the second car while you are at it. In 2021, 40.6% of Glen Waverley households had two vehicles and another 17.5% had three or more. If a second EV is likely within a few years, pulling a spare cable or an empty conduit during the first job costs far less effort than opening the same trench twice.

Underground supply and the pit on your boundary

At least one Glen Waverley estate was built without overhead wires: the local history record singles out a Robin Boyd-designed estate near Brentwood Secondary College where the power lines were put underground. In streets like that, your supply comes from a pit on the property boundary rather than a pole, and that matters as soon as a supply upgrade is on the table.

United Energy’s guide to underground electricity supply pits explains that altering an existing pit goes through its new and increased supply application, that sites over 100 amps need United Energy to investigate supply availability, and that a registered electrical contractor installs the mains from the pit to the main switchboard. Those consumer mains count as prescribed work, which means a Licensed Electrical Inspector has to sign them off before they carry power.

Two more points from the same guide are worth knowing before you commit to an upgrade. United Energy says a new pit is usually installed within 30 business days of the design being prepared, and longer if permits are needed from water, road or gas authorities. It also reserves the right to vary the pit location, so the spot on your boundary may not be the one you would pick.

If your car can take more power than a single-phase supply delivers, our three-phase power upgrade for EV charging page sets out the steps. Unless you drive more than about 500 km a week, United Energy’s guidance points to a basic 7 kW wall charger rather than a three-phase fast charger.

Apartments around Kingsway and the planned SRL station

Monash’s planning scheme now includes a Glen Waverley SRL East Structure Plan Area, introduced by amendment C177mona in July 2026. It encourages significant housing growth around the Suburban Rail Loop station, high housing growth along Springvale Road, High Street Road and Waverley Road, and low to mid-rise apartment buildings in the Bogong, Glen Waverley North, Springvale Road East and Waverley Road neighbourhoods.

New apartment buildings come with a head start. Under the National Construction Code’s J9D4 provisions, car parks in new apartment buildings must have switchboards set aside solely for EV charging, linked to a system that controls and schedules charging, with capacity for 7 kW (32 A) chargers to be added later, although the chargers themselves need not be installed at the outset. Older blocks usually have none of that, so adding charging means a retrofit, a capacity study and an owners corporation decision. Our apartment and strata EV charging service handles both situations.

Cost sharing is often the sticking point in an existing building, and the Owners Corporations Act 2006 has an answer. When upgrade works on common property are wholly or substantially for the benefit of some lots but not all, the levy has to be set so the owners who benefit more pay more. That principle lets a building install charging for the residents who want it now without asking every owner to fund it equally.

If you are buying off the plan near the station, ask three questions before you sign: is there a dedicated EV distribution board for the car park, how will each bay’s electricity be measured and billed, and which charging control system manages the load. The answers tell you how simple your own charger will be to add.

Council bays at Bogong Avenue, Euneva Avenue and Kingsway

Four of the City of Monash’s six public charging bays are in Glen Waverley: two in the Bogong car park, one at Monash Youth Services in the Euneva car park and one at the Glen Waverley Library on Kingsway. They are rated up to 22 kW and, according to council’s EV charging bay details, residents can use them for up to one hour in Glen Waverley.

We think one-hour limits are the right call for a busy centre, and they make the case for home charging rather than against it. An hour is a top-up while you eat on Kingsway, not a week of commuting. The structure plan also promotes consolidating parking at Bogong Avenue, Euneva Avenue and The Glen, and the first two already host council chargers. Solar Victoria’s explainer on public EV charging sets out how AC bays like these compare with DC fast chargers.

Kingsway businesses and workplace charging

The same structure plan encourages more office floorspace in central Glen Waverley, small offices above the shops on Kingsway South and more jobs in the Aristoc Road employment area. Staff and visitors who drive EVs will look for somewhere to plug in.

For a business, the questions are capacity, control and billing. Several chargers on one site usually need load management so they do not exceed the building’s supply. If you plan to charge drivers for the electricity, Victoria’s General Exemption Order 2022 exempts sellers of electricity for EV charging from holding a licence, with annual reporting to the Essential Services Commission. We also suggest chargers that support OCPP, the open protocol between chargers and management software, so you can change software providers later without replacing hardware. Our commercial EV charger installation team works through those details with building owners and tenants.

A Glen Waverley install, step by step

Most jobs follow the same sequence, whatever the property:

  1. Tell us your address, where the switchboard and meter box are, and how far the car parks from them.
  2. On site we pace out the run to the garage, choose between the house wall, the roof space or a trench, and note whether the supply arrives from a pole or a boundary pit.
  3. The written quote lists the charger, the cable size that distance calls for and any board or supply work.
  4. Where the supply or the pit has to change, United Energy’s new and increased supply application goes in before anything is ordered.
  5. Install day ends with the six mandatory tests and your Certificate of Electrical Safety.
  6. Last, the charger is registered on United Energy’s myEnergy portal and we set up the app or schedule with you.

At handover you get the Certificate of Electrical Safety, the charger’s manual and warranty details, and a walk-through of the app, including how to schedule charging for cheaper times on your electricity plan.

Frequently asked questions about charging in Glen Waverley

Our garage sits at the far end of a deep block. Will that make the job harder?

Not harder, but it changes the quote. A longer run can need heavier cable and either trenching or a route along the house, so we measure it on site rather than guess from a photo.

Our street has underground power. Does that change a supply upgrade?

It can. Your supply comes from a boundary pit, and altering that pit is handled through United Energy’s new and increased supply application. The new consumer mains from the pit to your switchboard must be inspected before they are energised.

Will a new apartment near the SRL station come with EV charging?

New buildings must provide EV-ready distribution boards and a charging control system under NCC J9D4, but the chargers themselves are not required at the outset. Ask the developer or owners corporation what has been provided before you buy.

Can I rely on the council bays near The Glen?

Only for top-ups. The four Glen Waverley bays allow up to one hour of charging, so they suit a quick boost rather than a full week of driving.

Can a business on Kingsway charge customers for EV charging?

Yes. Victoria’s General Exemption Order 2022 exempts people who sell electricity for EV charging from needing a retail licence, with an annual report to the Essential Services Commission. We can set up metering and billing-capable chargers to suit.

Do we have to deal with United Energy ourselves?

No. United Energy is the sole network for Glen Waverley 3150 according to the distributor locator CitiPower and Powercor publish, and we handle the paperwork with it for you, from the myEnergy registration to any new and increased supply application.

What DUKE Electrical Group clients say

The team really saved the day. I called them and they were still setting up the new office but still dropped everything to help me with my switchboard which kept tripping. They were out within a few hours and fixed the problem. Very appreciated!
